About Hk Hounds

Hey there! I'm Hunter, and I'm the owner and head guide at HK Hounds. I have had the honor and privilege of being born and raised in a hound running family. From the time I was in diapers, I was attached to my grandfather's and father's hip spending time with all the hounds. It has been a way of life for my family for three generations, and I would not have it any other way. ​​       

At the young age of four, my father was killed in a work related accident. Thanks to my grandfather and all my father's friends, this accident has fueled my fire. My father's love and passion for hunting and training dogs was like no other! It has been a goal of mine to live up to his standards and try to be the best houndsman possible while producing top quality hounds.         

Today, hunting, breeding, training, and selling hounds is not just a hobby, it is a way of life for me. It is what wakes me up and gives me my drive every day. I am committed to my pack and give them the opportunity to live their best life by consistently putting them on game. Being able to hunt each day of the season is what separates us from others. We do not take days off because we truly enjoy growing together on the mountain!       

When it comes to hounds, whether it is breeding or training dogs, we are looking for top quality traits: Cold nosed, gritty, tight feet, extreme stamina, and strong willed, are just to name a few. My goal is to put our hounds on game in various terrains and conditions to work on all these traits. When it comes to breeding, it's easy, we only breed top quality dogs in efforts to keep the best genes possible. ​

I am beyond thankful to have been brought up in the hound community and lifestyle! It is a way of life for me, and I would not trade that for anything. It is a commitment to myself to try and give all hounds a chance and help them become the best version of themselves as they can!

I was just starting out with two young dogs that I raised and trained from pups and soon realized that they needed a solid finished dog to help show them the ropes. I got in touch with Hunter and explained to him what I was looking for and ended up buying his Penny dog. She has been a game changer in helping my young dogs get on lions and she also handles like a dream.   • I bought a female dog from Hunter! She has been a dream to have in my kennel since day one! She is as gritty as they come, has a good cold nose and will grind out an old track. They have everything a hunter looks for: heart, nose, drive, and brains! I am a bear hunter but didn’t pass the opportunity to go hunt mountain lions with Hunter. He really put us in the game and showed us a great adventure. His attention to detail while taking pictures and teaching us how to hunt lions was second to none. Hunter has fine tuned an excellent breeding program. These are top quality dogs, cold nosed and built for dry ground hunting. Although they are great lion dogs they do really well on bears as well.   • Hunter and his guides are the some of the most polite and professional people I have ever met. I am very thankful I was able to harvest a mature tom lion on my second day. The accommodations were very clean, warm with fresh towels. We ate very healthy foods and I never went hungry. The care given to his kennel of dogs was incredible, they were very well fed, clean with fresh bedding. Hunter cares for his dogs better than many people care for their children. I have to add that I have hunted in several camps that kept hounds to run cats and those dogs were fed left over slop, some of the cheapest dried food and wallowed in their own crap. This was not the case with Hunter’s operation. Everything is clean, neat and orderly. His trucks ATV’s and UTV are very current and in excellent condition, we experienced no break downs. Everything worked every day. In closing I want to say if you want to hunt mountain lions Hunter Keating is the man to book with. He runs a top notch professional operation, and these guys will work their tail off for you. If at all possible, I definitely will hunt with Hunter again, it’s a great time, you hunt hard, see some awesome country and Hunter and his crew will work hard to put you on a trophy of a lifetime.
